The Sacred Everyday

I used to think rituals had to be grand.
That they needed incense, chants, moon phases, gold-threaded tapestries.
But then I learned that the most powerful rituals — the ones that truly root you — are quiet.

Like lighting a candle with both hands.
Like whispering a name while the wax begins to melt.
Like taking a breath before you open an email.
Like wiping your daughters’ faces with shea butter and a prayer.
That’s sacred, too.

Ritual isn’t performance.
It’s presence.
It’s the moment you decide to return to yourself.

I started Bailao & Co. to reclaim that space — for myself and for others who are tired of rushing.
The candles are vessels, yes. But they’re also invitations.
To sit.
To soften.
To come back into rhythm with something older than screens and deadlines.
To remember that your body is a temple even when the laundry’s not done.

Some days, I forget. I get swept up in the to-do lists and business demands and capitalism’s pace.
But then I light Duniya or Nyalam or Kisma Va Nasib, and something in me exhales.
It reminds me that I don’t have to be everything.
I just have to be.

So if today all you do is light a flame and breathe,
That’s enough.
That’s everything.
That’s a ritual.

And it’s sacred.

With deep love and slowness,
Mouna
